Dr. Katherine (Katie) Echols is the Assistant Vice President for Research and Economic Development and the Associate Director of Government Relations at Mississippi State University. She also serves as the State EPSCoR Director for Mississippi.
Dr. Echols plays a pivotal role in advancing MSU’s research mission and economic development initiatives, while ensuring a cohesive strategy for engaging with government entities at the local, state, and federal levels. She oversees special funding programs and assists with the development of interdisciplinary teams to pursue large funding opportunities. Her efforts have significantly contributed to the advancement of MSU’s research and development activity.
In her role as Director of Mississippi EPSCoR, Dr. Echols provides strategic oversight and coordination for NSF EPSCoR programs, working closely with university administration, faculty, and staff across the state to enhance research capacity and competitiveness. Her leadership has been crucial in securing substantial funding and fostering interdisciplinary collaborations. Dr. Echols is instrumental in the development and implementation of the state’s newest EPSCoR program aimed at establishing the MS Nano-bio and ImmunoEngineering Consortium to advance biotechnology and manufacturing research and she leads the NSF-funded Mississippi Research Alliance focused on strengthening the research ecosystem in the state.
Dr. Echols holds a Ph.D. in Public Policy and Administration from Mississippi State University, where she also earned her Master of Public Policy and Administration and a Bachelor of Science in Education. She is an active member of several professional societies.
